How do the FITS league points work?

Each time a fencer competes in the FITS League, they points along two layers.

Layer 1: Points directly related to their finish.

Each fencer earns points directly related to where they finish and how many fencers participated in the tournament. The last-place fencer will earn one point. The fencer who wins the gold will earn points equal to the number of competitors in the event.

This means that indicators (and therefore pool rounds) are very important. In a 25-person event, the difference between winning a pool bout 5-4 and winning a pool bout 5-0 could be the difference between finishing in 23rd place (earning 3 points) or finishing in 19th place (earning 7 points).

Layer 2: Bonus points based on round

The Fencing in the Schools league grants additional rewards to fencers who win direct elimination bouts and advance further into the tournament. Starting with fencers who finish in the top 16, fencers earn two points for every DE they win.

The result looks like this:

  • 1st place: 10 bonus points
  • 2nd place: 8 bonus points
  • 3rd and 4th place: 6 bonus points
  • 5th through 8th place: 4 bonus points
  • 9th through 16th place: 2 bonus points.

In our example 25-person event, the fencer who finished in first would earn 35 points (25+10). The fencer who finished in 16th would earn 12 points (10+2).

Fencers then aggregate their points across the season.
